Jill Bretherton: Updates on everything in the cottage garden

Updated: Dec 22, 2023

Nightmare weather keeps thwarting my landscaping plans!

I have so much to do in the garden but can't seem to get much done with these relentless downpours we've been having over here in the UK. We've seen deluge after deluge and 80mph gusts of wind. Anyhow, at least I know my new greenhouse can withstand pretty extreme weather.

If you watch my you tube channel you will know my plans for the garden this winter include re-landscaping. I decided the pergola was chopping the garden up in the wrong places and obstructing the flow of the borders. Since I wanted longer borders I needed to get rid of it. My plan is to dismantle it and move it over my new searting area and potting up area that I created this summer. I an undecided whether to have a polycarbonate roof (to ensure I don't block out the light) or to have it as a green living roof to increase bio diversity.

Anyhow, the weather and the sheer weight and size of it means I am taking longer than planned to dismantle it. The wooden beams over the top were so large and heavy I was worried about them falling on top of me so I had to strategically cut them and that was no mean feet at height on a step ladder in wind and rain. Each cut was taking about an hour and required several strategies to make sure the beams did not fall on me or collapse the entire structure over me. I used a saw and my nifty tree cutting chain saw that I demonstrated using earlier in the year. I still haven't removed the pergola but with the two largest beams now down, I feel much happier that the worst and most dangerous part of the job is over. I will update you when it's all down.

Once the pergola is down I can extend the cottage garden borders which will give a much better flow to the garden and I cannot wait until the wood is refashioned over the new seating area but that requires a lot of work yet! Once the borders are extended I can start thinking about the planting schemes and can even start planting up some of the hardy annuals and perennials that I have already grown.

My next non landscaping job will be my anemones bordeaux. I was supposed to do them several weeks ago so they could sprount before winter but heyho, I will sprout them now anyway and keep them in the greenhouse to hopefully encourage an earlier bloom than spring sprouted anemones. I will probably show this job in one of my next you tube videos so don't forget to check out my channel here:
